Technical Diplomas

A technical diploma is a certification students can get alongside their high school diploma. It shows that they have skills in a technical field and can enter that field right after they graduate high school. Technical diplomas allow high school students to enter the workforce immediately after they graduate high school.

Technical diplomas are also sometimes called technical certificates. Technical diplomas are given to high school students that attend a vocational school or attend specific classes outside of their high school.

Technical diploma programs typically involve very hands-on programs and are meant to prepare their students for hands-on fields. High school students can typically get a technical diploma in machining, manufacturing, culinary arts, masonry, welding, and media production fields.

Many technical diploma programs are accelerated so students can complete the program in a semester or two, but some of the technical programs take two years to finish. If the program can’t be completed within two semesters, some technical diplomas are embedded and instead give students college credit that they can use while pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Many technical diploma programs are accelerated, which means they are more difficult than the average class that high school students are used to. Technical programs allow high school students to get ahead on their future schooling if they already have an idea of what they want to do after they graduate, while still allowing them to finish high school and have a somewhat regular high school experience.

Should I Get a Technical Diploma?

If you want to go into a specific workforce immediately after you graduate high school, or if you want to get ahead in your college education and are attending a school where you can get a technical diploma, then you should consider getting one. However, if you are feeling overwhelmed with the amount of school work that you currently have while attending regular high school classes, then you may not want to get a technical diploma.

Technical diploma programs take a lot of time to complete, so you should keep in mind that you will need to devote a lot of your free time to doing school work for the program, and you will not have very many classes with your friends while you attend high school. If you do not want to devote more of your free time to school work, then you may not want to enroll in a technical diploma program.

However, if you think that you can handle extra school work and want to enter the workforce or enroll in college immediately after you graduate high school, then you should begin a technical diploma program. If you like hands-on work and think that you will want to go into culinary arts, welding, receptionist fields, medical or mechanical fields, then you should consider this option.

You can still have a relatively normal high school experience while you are completing a technical degree program, but the program will reduce the amount of free time that you have.

Whether or not you should get a technical diploma is up to you. Before you decide whether or not to enroll in a program, talk to your parents and see if they think that is a good idea for you. They will talk through the pros and cons with you. Also, talk to your high school guidance counselor and see if you can fit a technical diploma program into your current school schedule and still graduate on time.

If you think that you can handle a technical diploma program while you are in your last few years of high school, and your high school allows you to do so, then feel free to try it out! However, make sure you make that decision before you begin your senior year of high school, as it can take up to 2 years to complete a technical diploma program.
